About the band:

Summer Rona (vocals)

Summer Rona and an all star band from Harlem will be playing the hits of the legendary Teena Marie. A special appearance will be made by a Rick James artist to join her for “Fire and Desire” and “Sucker for Love”. You do not want to miss this one night event!

Rhythm-and-blues singer Teena Marie was considered the “Ivory Queen of Soul.” Also known as Lady T, she made history signing to soul music label Motown Records, in 1976. Radio programmers and audiences assumed she was black until she performed with Rick James on Soul Train. She was the show’s first white female guest and appeared eight more times. She wrote and produced many of her own songs and was one of the first to incorporate rap into her music. She paved the way for many female artists and producers in R&B and was a true pioneer.

Later, she’d become one of the most outspoken female artists in pop after she countersued her label and won. The lawsuit resulted in “The Brockert Initiative”, which made it illegal for a record company to keep an artist under contract without releasing new material for that artist. In such instances, artists are able to sign and release with another label instead of being held back by an unsupportive one.

Teena’s rich history and legacy in music is a story that will be told and we will tell it first!

Derek Organ (Teena’s drummer) stated “Summer Rona not only looks and sounds just like Teena, she has her same spunk, drive and energy. I about passed out when I saw her walk into rehearsal. The ghost of Teena is here and ready to bring the funk!”
