ABOUT THE ARTIST

DANNY MIXON

Danny Dixon is a performing and recording artist, is also a former Music Director at Minton’s Playhouse; and returns to take to the stage with his own band!  He is one of New York’s most prolific jazz pianists and organists.  With his Trio or Quartet he has wowed audiences with his hard swinging performances and sensitive ballads in clubs, concert halls and festivals here and outside of the United States to great acclaim! He is a highly regarded educator/instructor at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and at Jazzmobile’s Saturday Jazz Workshop.

Danny began playing professionally in his teens and over the years as a member of the band, he has also performed with great artists outside of the genre of jazz. Some of the music giants that called on Danny to play in their bands include Dee Dee Bridgewater, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Cassandra Wilson, and the reigning “King of Tap” Savion Glover!   Early in his career he played with Lionel Hampton, Joe Williams and was Betty Carter’s pianist and music director.

Danny has worked with these legendary performers, Houston Person, Lionel Hampton, Joe Williams, Frank Foster, and Charles Mingus. With his own group he has enjoyed standing ovations from audiences, with over a thousand in attendance, at New York City’s longest running jazz festival: Jazzmobile’s SUMMERFEST!
